Categories of Migration
Business Skills Migration
The Business Skills visa class of Australia's migration program
encourages successful business people to settle permanently in Australia
and develop new or existing businesses.
Business owners, senior executives and investors can apply
for a visa under the Business Skills category.
Under the two-stage arrangements introduced on 1 March 2003, business
migrants are granted a Business Skills (Provisional) visa for four years
and, after establishing the requisite level of business or maintaining
their eligible investment, are eligible to make an application for a
Business Skills (Residence) visa.
A direct permanent residence category known as the Business
Talent Visa is also available for high-calibre business migrants
sponsored by State/Territory governments.
The Business Skills program is divided into four categories:
business owner: for owners or part-owners of a business
(subclass 160/163);
senior executive: for senior executive employees of major businesses
(subclass 161/164);
investor: for investors/business people willing to invest in Australia
(subclass 162/165);
business talent: for high-calibre business people who have sponsorship
from a State/Territory government (subclass 132).
Two of the larger categories of skilled migrants
are the Skilled-Independent and Skilled-Australian Sponsored (SAS).
Entry under both categories is dependent on a points test. The aim
of the points test is to identify factors in a potential migrant
that will either benefit Australia or help with settlement. The factors
assessed depend on the migration category.
For Independent migrants they cover such areas as work skills (taking
into account the acceptability of a person's qualifications in Australia
and the amount of experience they have in their job), age and English
language competency.
For SAS applicants, the above criteria apply, as well as family ties
and the status of sponsors. (SAS covers family members such as non-dependent
children, brothers, sisters, working age parents, nieces and nephews.).
Bonus points are available to both Independent and SAS applicants for
a range of criteria including:
skilled work experience;
occupations in demand;
Australian qualifications;
skilled spouse;
Australian work experience;
foreign language skills.
